Task 1 Exploration
The 13th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is: CLIMATE ACTION
"Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts."
5.4Power plants like this one in Juliette, Georgia, will soon have to follow stricter rules on pollution that drifts to other states.
As the figure shown above, there is a power plant located in Juliette, Georgia. The power plant appears to be emitting smoke or steam, indicating its operational status. The composition of the photograph likely emphasizes the power plant as the central element by the photographer, Robb Kendrick used the framing technique. This makes the power plant significantly different from its surroundings. The power plant emitted harmful gases or harmful substance directly destroyed the air quality and indirectly affect the health of organism(human being, animals and plants). On the other hand, the pollution also causing a lot of butterfly effects.
The design principles that revolved around the photo is asymmetrical balance. Furthermore, contrast and emphasis also include in the photo. The power plant emitted the smoke or steam, so there has movement. Lastly I think is unity because the various element within the photograph, including the power plant, landscape, and more, they work together to create a unified visual narrative.
Task 2 Visual Analysis
The 13th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is: CLIMATE ACTION
"Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts."
Steam and smoke rise from the cooling towers and chimneys of a power plant in Juliette, Georgia.
Observation
The image depicts a power plant in Juliette, Georgia and this image is in landscape format. In addition, this work is presented from a bird's eye view. In the foreground, several tall chimneys stand in prominent positions, soaring into the sky. The main colors in the image are classic industrial colors, with shades of gray and black dominating the landscape. It is also worth noting that the sky above the factory appears hazy due to gases emitted from the chimneys, indicating potential pollution at the facility. Furthermore, The strong lights of the factory and the darkening background of the sky reveal a striking visual impact.
Analysis
The image achieves dynamic balance through its asymmetrical composition, with the visual weight of the power plant offset by the expanse of sky and landscape. The focal point is the towering chimney, emphasize the industrial infrastructure against a serene natural backdrop. The stack's vertical lines and rising gases draw the viewer's eye upward, highlighting the scale and activity of the power plant while conveying a sense of energy(contrast). The repetition of these lines enhances visual movement and cohesion. Despite their differences, the various elements blend harmoniously together to create a unified(unity) composition. Scale and proportion have been carefully maintained with the chimneys positioned to follow the rule of thirds, further enhancing spatial organization and visual coherence.
Interpretation
The image is photograph by Robb Kendrick and located in Juliette, Georgia as the title mention. When going to the photographer page, there are some images that related to climate action which are photographed by Robb Kendrick.
The Scherer power plant in Juliet, Georgia
It is another view to look the power plant in Juliette, Georgia.
fig 5
Steam and smoke rise from the cooling towers and chimneys of a power plant. Artificial intelligence is being used to prove the case that plants that burn carbon-based fuels aren't profitable.
fig 6
A farmer prepares for spring near a power plant in Shanxi Province, China. The facility, which supplies electricity to Beijing, 200 miles away, covers local fields, crops, and people with soot.
Look at the page, I find that the photographer mostly take the images about natural and humanities. In the terms of weather disaster, he likely took the images like factories have the tall chimneys and steam/smoke. In addition, it is not ruled out that his boss requested to take such a photo where the exhaust emissions from the factory can be clearly seen. Therefore, I think the purpose of the design, especially in the context of the image of the Joliet, Georgia power plant, is to potentially raise awareness of climate action and environmental issues. According to Robb Kendrick's page, he currently specializes in capturing images related to natural landscapes and human activities, including the impact of industrialization on the environment. The image of the power plant emphasizes the impact of industrial pollution on the environment, aligning with Kendrick’s broader narrative about the need for sustainable practices and climate action. The design therefore aims to highlight the consequences of carbon-based fuel consumption and advocate for more sustainable energy practices.
Task 3 Design
Visual Analysis
Earth in Clinic
Observation
In the design above can see a character personifying the earth and going to a clinic because he is sick. The "Earthlings" are the center of the composition and are prominently positioned in the foreground, so when looking at this artwork the focus is directly on the "Earthlings". He was hunched over, coughing, and had a tired look on his face that suggested he was unwell or sick. Judging from the black medical logo on the clinic carpet, the "Earthlings" mistakenly entered an illegal clinic. The area around this clinic is dark instead of the usual clinic colors we see. It is obvious that the "earth people" went to an informal clinic to see a doctor.
Analysis
The first thing can see in this artwork is the use of emphasis to draw attention to the central theme – climate action. Additionally, the use of contrast is evident in the juxtaposition of "Earthlings" with their surroundings, highlighting the contrast between natural and man-made environments. In addition, when seeing this design, our eyes will first see the bright earth because the surrounding environment is mainly dark, which represents the informality of the clinic. The unity of the composition is achieved through the close arrangement of elements such as the cigarette butts on the ground, the broken window and the N word of the CLINIC that seems to fall down, where the earth is the focal point of the surroundings. In addition, there is the design principle - the use of movement. I convey the feeling of movement through the poses and expressions of the "earthlings" and the direction of the smoke.
Interpretation
This design delves into the complex relationship between the current state of the planet and its impact on our human health. A profound design theme for this important message. I do this by describing Earth as a fragile character who is visiting an illegal clinic because he is ill. This design reinforces that although we humans have realized that the damage to the earth has been inflicted and is intensifying, we humans have intensified our efforts to destroy it. Although today's society is beginning to wake up, the speed of destruction is far faster than we imagined. Anthropomorphism emphasizes that our planet is just as fragile as we humans are, and serves as a poignant reminder of the serious consequences our actions have on the health of our planet.
Furthermore, the continued destruction of the planet symbolizes our human still destroyed the planet by different kinds of way.It serves as a metaphor for the urgent need to address environmental issues and combat climate change, while posing very significant threats to ecosystems and human health.
The juxtaposition of the natural world, represented by "Earthlings," and the setting of the illegal clinic highlights the stark contrast between human activity and the health of the planet. This dissonance prompts us humans to think about our role in promoting environmental stewardship and adopting sustainable living practices. It calls for a re-evaluation of our human relationship with the planet and encourages proactive rescue measures to protect the health of the planet for future generations.

Reflection
1. What have I learnt in this module?
I had learnt the design principles such as emphasis, contrast, balance, rules of third, the golden ratio and a lots that in the lecture slides. The other hand is understood how to analysis the artworks using by observation, analysis and interpretation and using the design principles to create an own artwork.
2. What did I enjoy the most?
The part that I enjoyed the most is to design an own artwork because it allows for limitless self-expression, creativity, emotional exploration, and personal growth. Although there are times when I am uninspired during the design process, I still think this is the most interesting part.
3. What did I not enjoy the most?
I think the part I didn't enjoy is analysis because I need to observe deeply and give more explanation and details that I observed inside the artwork.
4. What have I learnt about myself through this module?
I had learnt that I am not good enough in analysis an artwork and when designing an artwork, I'm a little hesitate in what should I add inside the artwork.
5. What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
I had improved my skill that analysis an artwork before I haven't touch this learning. The thing that I didn't have a big change I think is designing an artwork because I didn't spend much time to figure out my bad habits when I designing an artwork.
6. What could be improved in this module?
Overall is good and well. This module made me more understand the knowledge when we create an artwork. Furthermore, I think maybe can add one more artwork analysis in analysis part so that can more understand the analysis between different artworks as a student.
