We need to form 5 or 6 people in a group, then select a culture that we are interested. Then do research about the topic we have decided on and create an artwork as the outcome for submission.
LECTURE
In the second week we learned about cultural sensitivity in
design.
Cultural sensitivity in design involves understanding and respecting the
diverse cultural backgrounds, values, and norms of users. It requires
designers to avoid stereotypes, conduct thorough research, and incorporate
inclusive practices such as user testing and collaboration with diverse
cultural groups. By considering cultural differences and ensuring designs
are respectful and inclusive, designers can create products, services, and
experiences that resonate with a broader audience and effectively meet their
needs.
Project 1 Proposal
Progression
After lecturers explained what design sensitivity is, we formed a team of 6
people. We have 6 group members, which is me, Yap Guang You, Vincent,
Amelee, Angel, and Mychelle.
We start our first meeting after we form a group. At this meeting, we start
with a minor ice breaking, understanding each other's name and studying
courses and which semester are we at. Then we talked about the theme culture
we were going to select, given some ideas. In the end, we selected the "Batik Culture".
Meeting
Then we had our second meeting on Monday(19.02.2024), in this meeting we
defined our task and decided on a more specific topic which is Indonesia
Batik. Then we have set our S.O.P. to make sure we are on the right track
during the process. Our task now is to define our goals do research come out
with some ideas, and then write a rationale and make a presentation video for
proposing.
Proposal slide
For the proposal slide, we are going to do it individually, do our own
research, and come up with our own idea, then we have a meeting to combine
them all and turn it into a proposal video. Me, Vincent, and Yap handled the
proposal video, then the others should be handling the presentation slide, but
they didn't finish on time, so we spent some time finishing the rest.

Data Collection
After meeting with our supervisor, Ms. Maria, we started our data collection
phase. We selected two methods for collecting these data, first, we went to
the fabric museum in Kuala Lumpur to study the history of batik and its
influences in Malay culture.

I also went to the batik shop to observe the common and special material of the batik and the patterns.

Overall, most of the batik patterns are commonly used natural elements such as floral and the things that they mostly used. Furthermore, in order to meet market demand, most batik types are printed batiks. Of course, there are also customized batiks with high-quality fabrics such as silk.
Next, we continue or study online. Everybody, each of us focuses on each part, Simon focuses on the material and technique, and I focus on the symbols and colors chosen.

Idea 1
Soft Copy for Final
First is to prepare a notebook and the durable blue fabric
Afterwards, cut the fabric into the shape of a book, as well as some decorations and required elements.
Afterwards, glue the prepared main element - the purple flower - tightly in the correct position as shown in the soft copy.
After completing the flower part, we used small green glittery circles and glued them to look like the flower stems.
In order to keep the naturalness of the flower stem, we carefully glued the stem parts one by one.
After completing the main body, we combined it with the book.
Then we cut off the excess part of the fabric to make it more beautiful.
This is the look we combined batik with books.

Finally, decorate it with some small shiny circles to make it look tactile and less empty.
